Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.

The goal of this symposium is to familiarize the participants with the science of heath literacy and to disseminate best practice interventions targeting primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Health literacy ranges from being able to make health decisions by reading food labels, to a patient acquiring extensive knowledge and information about a specific disease in order to increase coping capacity.

Most importantly, health literacy awakens the intrinsic motivation of patients to assume more responsibility with regards to their health. Health literacy is expected to be a significant facilitating factor with regards to health maintenance and disease management.
